AI lecture notes in your language: 15 locales for Udemy and YouTube

Most AI note tools assume their user speaks English. The lecture's in English. The notes are in English. The interface, the quiz prompts, the buttons — all English. That's a problem if your strongest language is Indonesian, Spanish, Arabic, or Hindi. Ravenote v1.0.5 fixes that.

Why studying in your strongest language matters

The research is consistent: comprehension and retention drop measurably when learners process new material in a non-native language. Not because the language is harder — because cognitive load is higher. Your working memory is doing two jobs at once: parsing the words AND building the mental model of the concept. Strip the parsing job away and the mental model gets more attention.

This matters most for the kind of learning that happens on Udemy and YouTube — technical concepts, frameworks, derivations. The video might be in English because that's where the supply is, but the notes don't have to be. If you watch a Kubernetes course in English and translate-as-you-go in your head, you've split your attention. If the notes come out in your strongest language afterward, your review pass costs nothing.

The 15 languages Ravenote supports

The list maps to a pragmatic estimate of where Udemy and YouTube self-learners actually live, weighted by buying power. It's not exhaustive — French is here, Italian isn't, yet — and we expect to grow it based on user requests.

What actually changes when you switch language

The notes themselves. The system prompt enforces output in your selected language regardless of the source video. Watch a Udemy course on Docker in English; get the notes back in Indonesian. The LLM (Claude, GPT, Gemini — your choice) handles native fluency well at this scale.

The quizzes. When Ravenote pauses the video to check your understanding, the question and options render in your language. The "correct"/"close, but…" feedback is localized too. You're not breaking out of your reading flow to parse English MCQ stems.

The interface. Every button, label, error message, settings field. The floating dialog that appears on Udemy/YouTube and the popup behind the toolbar icon both switch together — one click in Settings updates both, no reload needed.

The chip narration. The pill that pulses next to the dialog ("LISTENING", "DRAFTING NOTES", "NOTES READY") localizes too. In Indonesian it reads MENDENGARKAN, MENULIS CATATAN, CATATAN SIAP. In Arabic the chip flows right-to-left with the rest of the UI.

RTL is real, not an afterthought. When Arabic is selected, the dialog flips direction, the chip flow reverses, and notes render right-aligned. We've heard from Arabic-speaking users that most "AI tools that say they support Arabic" mean "the AI model can output Arabic text" — not "the entire UI is built for an RTL reader." Ravenote's UI is built for it.

The honest fallback layer

UI strings are AI-drafted from English originals and iterate from user feedback. Most Western European and Indo-Pacific languages are tight; the long tail (Hindi pluralization, Mandarin classifier choice, Korean honorifics in casual contexts) gets refined as users send corrections through the in-extension feedback form.

One pre-existing gap: the conversational "heartbeat" phrases that flash on the chip every ~20 seconds in Active mode (lines like "Hmm, the {term}…" or "Following the {term} thread") are currently localized for English, Indonesian, and Arabic only. In other locales, the heartbeat falls back to English phrases. We're aware and shipping the rest in a near-term update — the chip's state labels are fully localized; just the conversational phrases trail.

How to switch language

Two paths:

  1. First-run onboarding — a fresh install opens in English by default. Pick your language from the dropdown on Step 1; the entire onboarding card switches the moment you select. Click Continue, set up your API key (or skip and come back to it via the popup), and you're done.
  2. Mid-session — open the floating dialog, click the gear icon, change Language. The dialog updates immediately and the popup updates within a second. Notes generated after the switch will be in the new language.

Why we built this when most tools didn't

Multilingual support is one of those features that doesn't move metrics in markets the founder lives in, which is why most AI tools ship English-only and call it MVP. But "MVP" doesn't mean "the smallest thing we can build" — it means "the smallest thing that proves the value loop works." For a non-English speaker, the loop is broken if the notes come back in a language they have to translate before reading. The "MV" is empty without the "P".

Ravenote's bet is that learning happens everywhere, not just in English-speaking markets, and the right product respects that.

Localized in v1.0.5.1 across all 15 languages. The pill chip that sits next to the floating dialog now reads in your language — MENDENGARKAN, ESCUCHANDO, 聆听中, and so on — not just English.
